March 2014 Edition – Vol. 6 no. 3

SIGNAL is the main monthly information medium of the Microsystems Strategic Alliance of Québec (ReSMiQ). This newsletter aims to be an active link between the members of ReSMiQ and all individuals who have an interest in research and innovation in microsystems. We commit ourselves to promote in it our members’ research and increase ReSMiQ’s visibility.

ReSMiQ is a group of researchers in an interuniversity research center that can count on the support of the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Nature et technologies (FRQNT) and ten (10) Quebec universities involved in microsystems research.

In this issue we present you the news for the month of March 2014. New format for SIGNAL – As more and more web user are browsing on mobile platforms such as digital tablets and smart phones, we decided to renew the format of our monthly newsletter SIGNAL for a more user-friendly reading. Do not hesitate to send us any comments that could help us improve the quality.

ReSMiQ annual symposium & scientific poster competition – Our next annual symposium will be held as part of the 82nd ACFAS conference to be held in Montréal at the Concordia university, on May 12, 2014. The annual scientific poster competition for graduate students affiliated to ReSMiQ will be one of the highlight of the program. The call for proposal generated a large number of submission. The projects that were selected will be presented during our symposium and a panel of judges will evaluate each contributions. Three awards will be given to the best contributions.

NEWS FROM OUR MEMBERS

Exposure – Dr. Sawan from Polytechnique offered a keynote address at the LAAS conference which was held in Beirut on March 26 – 28, 2014.

Achievement – Dr. Gosselin from Université Laval received  an ENGAGE PLUS grant form NSERC with Doric Lenses Optogeneticas as industrial partner. – Dr. Pratte from Université de Sherbrooke received a John-R. Evans leaders fund grant from the Canada foundation for innovation.

Involvment – Dr. Ajib from Université du Québec à Montréal is the general chair of the 12th ACM international symposium on mobility management and wireless access – MobiWac2014, to be held in Montréal on September 21 – 26, 2014.

RESMIQ’S ACTIVITIES

Financial support for undergraduate students
To stimulate integration of new students within the affiliated laboratories of ReSMiQ holds annually a financial support competition for undergraduate full time students.

Characteristics – Duration of three (3) months. – Starting May 1, 2014. – 2000$ for the whole duration.

Application information Applications must be received at ReSMiQ’s administrative office on April 7, 2014 at the latest. Applications must be submitted in PDF format via the online submission page.

RID2014 – Project demonstration competition MORE THAN 5000$ IN AWARDS!

This competition is dedicated to the presentation of undergraduate and graduate students projects where they will demonstrate their scientific and technical expertise during a competition where each presenter will display their project via a technical demonstration, a live experiment. Prices will be awarded to the best presentations. It is open to all full time students enrolled in a university in the province of Québec.

Selection Criteria The project must be scientifically sound and technically fully functional. Each project should be complete to demonstrate the output results without the requirement of special set-up or test equipment. The project must propose a novel technique or reveal a significant advantage over the conventional methods.

Deadline for abstract submission : May 1, 2014
Notification of accceptance : June  1, 2014
